While water is a renewable resource, it is at the same time a finite resource. The total quantity of water available on the globe is the same as it was two thousand years ago. It is important to appreciate the fact that only 3 per cent of the world’s water is fresh and roughly one-third of it is inaccessible. Access to clean drinking water is one of the primary factors that determine the prosperity, health and wellness of a society.

While supply of drinking water remains a concern, ensuring its safety is a bigger challenge. The World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water. In India, diarrhea alone causes more than 1,600 deaths daily. This situation gets more complicated as women and children are the ones getting affected the most due to unavailability of clean drinking water. Around 37.7 million Indians are affected by waterborne diseases annually of which 75 per cent are children.

Besides this, water scarcity is bringing many adverse effects indirectly. Incidences of recurring diarrhea often lead to stunted growth and malnutrition in children. In many rural and water scarce areas, women have to devote long hours in collecting drinking water. Not only the Quality of life is being affected, but a large population is not getting a fair chance to lead their lives. Estimates show that 73 million working days are lost due to water borne disease each year which mounts up to a huge loss for any economy.
