Lamotrigine is a synthetic phenyltriazine with antiepileptic and analgesic properties. Lamotrigine enhances the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which may result in a reduction of pain-related transmission of signals along nerve fibers. This agent may also inhibit voltage-gated sodium channels, suppress glutamate release, and inhibit serotonin reuptake.

lamotrigine is white to cream coloured powder. It is soluble in dmso (12 mgml) at 40 °c, ethanol (12 mgml) at 40 °c, dmf (25 mgml), methanol, & dilute hydrochloric acid (slightly soluble) insoluble in water with melting range of 216°c to 218°c.
