Isopropyl Alcohol (IP/BP) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C3H8O or C3H7OH. It is a colorless, flammable chemical compound with a strong odor. Isopropyl Alcohol is the simplest example of a secondary alcohol, where the alcohol carbon atom is attached to two other carbon atoms sometimes shown as (CH3)2CHOH.
Isopropyl Alcohol is miscible in water, alcohol, ether, and chloroform. It will dissolve ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, many oils, alkaloids, gums, and natural resins. Isopropyl Alcohol is insoluble in salt solutions.
Isopropyl Alcohol in particular is popular for pharmaceutical applications, it is presumed due to the low toxicity of any residues. Some Isopropyl Alcohol is used as a chemical intermediate. Disinfecting pads typically contain a 60–70% solution of isopropyl alcohol in water. A 75% v/v solution in water may be used as a hand sanitizer.

Identification – [A] and [B] passes. A. Mix 1ml of 10% v/v solution with 2 ml of mercuric sulphate solution and heat just to boiling; a white or yellowish white precipitate is produced.
B. Gently heat 1 ml with 4 ml of dilute potassium dichromate solution and 1 ml sulphuric acid, acetone, recognizable by its odour, is evolved.
Solubility – Miscible with water, with chloroform and with ether. Miscible with water, with chloroform and with ether.
Acidity & Alkalinity: Complies NMT 0.06ml of 0.1 ml of NaOH is required to make the resulting solution alkaline to phenolphthalein solution.
Distillation Range: 95% [distills bet. 82.2°C to 82.8°C] NLT 95% v/v distills between [81°C to 83°C]
Refractive Index: 1.377 [1.377 to 1.378]
Weight per ml [at 20°C]: 0.7839 [Limit bet. 0.782g to 0.786g]
Aldehydes and Keytones: Passes

NMT [2.0 ml of 0.1 ml of NaOH is required]
Non Volatile Matter: 0.0005% NMT [0.002% w/v]
Water – insoluble matter: Complies No opalescence is produced
