Irrigation can be defined as the process of supplying water to an area for assisting growth of crops. This helps in maintaining landscapes and re-vegetation of the distributed soil during inadequate rainfalls. Irrigation suppresses growth, provides protection against frost and prevents soil consolidation. Traditional methods are costly and impractical in many situations.

There are various techniques for irrigation depending on the way water is obtained and distributed.
