When there is imbalance in the homeostasis of body, diseases manifest. There are three main causes of Illness:

Asatmendriyartha Samyoga: Excessive indulgence (ati yoga), hypo interaction (hina yoga) & perverse use (mithya yoga) of organs of conation and cognition – are the main causes of diseases. These cause  excess of Vata which leads to imbalance, resulting in disease process.

Prajnaparadha: It is the volitional transgression or failure of intellect. This happens due to the excitement of doshas causing inequilibrium in the mind.

Parinama: Due to changes in environment, climate and age etc, there is imbalance of doshas.

Another important cause of disease is Vegavarodha i.e suppression of natural Urges eg urination, defaecation, hunger, sleep etc.

By being aware of & preventing the cause of disease one can not only heal oneself but also live a balanced and harmonious life.

Ayurveda’s motto is “Swasthasya swasthya rakshanama l Aturasya vikara prashamanam cha ll” i.e  Maintaining the health of a healthy person and curing the disease of the ailing person.
