Tool steels, super alloys and other specialized metals, while also high in chromium content, are manufactured in smaller amounts and are therefore lower in over-all chromium applications. Chromium is most widely used as ferrochrome. The carbon level is the most significant factor in deciding the price difference between the various ferrochrome grades. The widespread move towards duplex processing practices such as AOD, CLU, etc. has led to a major increase in the use of high-carbon ferrochrome.
