Hand Block Printing

Bagru, a rural indian village in rajasthan is situated around thirty kilometers east of jaipur city. its traditional process of hand block printing on textiles, with rich natural colors has been known for many centuries. the elaborate and rich colored floral, linear and geometrical prints of bagru occupy a prominent position on the map of india, so also on international level.
as a matter of fact, bagru prints are more famous for their exceptional quality of being eco-friendly. even today, artisans use traditional vegetable dyes for printing the cloth. like, the color blue is made from indigo, greens out of indigo mixed with pomegranate, red from madder root and yellow from turmeric. usually bagru prints have ethnic floral, linear and geometrical patterns in natural colors. bagru prints form the essential part of the block printing industry of rajasthan.
However, the natural dyes used, to have an extent, been replaced by chemical formulations, though interestingly the traditional process of mordanting and resist remains the same as do the the dyeing stages and methodology.
Bagru prints are used mostly for ghagras (skirts), odhnis (scarves), pagris (turbans), some of the fabulous bed covers and other materials.
Today, the products made with bagru block prints have entered into home furnishings, apparel and accessories.
