Halofuginone is a halogenated derivative of febrifugine, the active component of a medicinal herb (Dichroa febrifuga) long used as a treatment for malaria in traditional Chinese medicine. It displays remarkable in vitro activity against the parasite and is believed to target prolyl-tRNA synthetase (proRS). FDA–approved feed additive for prevention of coccidiosis in broiler chickens and growing turkeys ; also, other halofuginone salts are used against protozoan parasites in cattle.
