The potato crop is usually grown not from seed but from "seed potatoes" - small tubers or pieces of tuber sown to a depth of 5 to 10 cm. Purity of the cultivars and healthy seed tubers are essential for a successful crop. Tuber seed should be disease-free, well-sprouted and from 30 to 40 g each in weight.
Grow potatoes in fall, winter, and spring in hot summer southern regions. Plant potatoes as early as 4 to 6 weeks before the average last frost in spring or any time after the soil temperature warms to 40°F. Potatoes need 75 to 135 or more cool, frost-free days to reach harvest depending on the variety.
The areas where potato crop is prominently cultivated are: Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Punjab. In India Uttar Pradesh is the area where potatoes are grown in a big way. Almost over 41% of the total production of potato is from Uttar Pradesh.
