a)      The striking of an ARC between the metal work piece and the carbon electrode.

b)      Melting by the ARC

c)      Removal if the molten metal with compressed air jets, following parallel to the electrode from the torch.

The Gauging Carbon Electrode used in this gouging process is made up of special mixture of carbon and graphite, The electrode is usually Copper jacketed to increase its life, provide a uniform grove, and increase the current carrying capacity and radiated heat.
