    Mushrooms have long been valued as highly tasty and nutritional foods by many many throughout the world. Now, mushroom has emerged as important agro-based industry in Jammu division.It is a unique gift of nature and the only non-green crop cultivated for commerce in the world. It is the fruit body of a fungus and is a rich source of vegetable protein diet. Mushrooms are cultivated indoors in a thatched shed or inside a cropping room. It is grown on agricultural wastes like wheat straw, paddy straw, sawdust, sugarcane bagasse, etc.

    There are approximately 140,000 species of mushroom-forming fungi in the world, but science is only familiar with about 10%, while only 100 species are being useful for health and Medical uses. Few of them are edible and are cultivated under controlled conditions indoors. Every mushroom has its own specific requirement for growth and nutrition. Different mushrooms require different raw materials as its substrate for growth. It is cultivated in summer season at a temperature range from 28-35°C. In coastal regions of India where high temperature together with high relative humidity is prevalent in summer months

    Mushroom cultivation started in some other states of india like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan during winter month while earlier, it was grown only in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh or in the hills of Himalayan ranges. It is an excellent sources of protein,Vitamins, minerals, folic acid and is a best source of iron.

    Majorly, three types of mushrooms are being cultivated in the division namely:
    1. Milky mushroom (July-Sep)
    2. White button mushroom (Sep-March)
    3. Dhingri or Oyster (Oct-Dec and Jan-March)

    From all types, Butter mushroom is most the popular type among above which can be cultivate at very small scale level rather than large-scale farming
