It dawned on us one day to question why stubby holders were black in colour. Well, we guess it is so because most wetsuits are black, but unfortunately black is also an excellent absorber of infra-red (or radiant) heat. So a black stubby holder would easily absorb heat from the sun, which is a pretty strong heat source, just like the nice roaring fire in the backyard; the human body also radiates a certain amount of heat. So, back in 2001 we set about making a cooler which would offer better insulation from radiant heat. Today, several years later we've come up with a design that not only works better than current stubby holders in the sun, it also looks better than the old type as well!
Can you really tell the difference in your mouth? You bet you can!
What is the ideal or optimum drinking temperature for ?
The ideal serving temperature for is derived from its method of fermentation. Bottom fermented beers, like lager or pilsner, tend to be best served cold, on the other hand, top fermented beers, like ale and stouts, taste better when slightly warmer. This much seems to be written into our DNA, and of course much is left to personal preference. A stubby holder will certainly help keep your in the optimum temperature range for longer!
Another guide that may help though is the colour of the . Many enthusiasts indicate that light colored beers are best enjoyed cold, while dark colored beers are best served at higher temperatures. Stout, for instance, can best be enjoyed at 11 - 13oC, and like red , should really be served in a goblet. Likewise, lager is best enjoyed at 5 - 7oC and should be served in tall glasses (tall thin glasses reduce the amount of heat that may be absorbed by the drink).Â
Aside from looking lush, the job of any can or bottle insulator is to keep the drink in the optimum ranges for as long as possible, so all those subtle nuances that alchemists labor over can be best appreciated by you!
Here's what a good stubby holder can do for your . Both traditional neoprene stubby holders and Freezy Stubby Cooler stop the ambient air and incident sunlight from heating up the liquid in the can or bottle. You may note that the Freezy cooler, even though it is 3mm thick compared to the 5mm neoprene stubby holder, has the slight edge here.Â
We think that this is most likely due to the fact that the neoprene stubby holder can hold much more 'stored' heat that is transferred to the can throughout the duration of measuring. Have you ever left a black neoprene stubby holder out in the sunshine and felt how hot it gets? Perhaps it's not a good idea to put that on your can until it cools down a bit!
