Earlier, Indian bridal Bindis, placed between the eyebrows, were elaborately painted on. Present day brides indulge in bling with gems replacing these Indian eyebrow bindis. However, most brides prefer to go completely traditional and ethnic with chemical free paints for making elaborate red and white designs on the forehead- albeit dotted with shimmer and gems to go with the current trend.

Majority of the more conscious brides who fear damaging their make-up go in for sticker bindis that are gem encrusted to highlight their overall look. The bindi art varies for brides hailing from different states. For instance, a lot of North Indian brides use bling and usually opt for sticker gems and Indian bridal Bindis with a large bindi forming the center. However, the Bengali brides go for the traditional red big bindi in the middle and the traditional red and white dots and embellishments that are painted on, commonly known as chandan. On the other hand, Marathi brides don the traditional crescent shaped Indian bridal Bindis in the center and decorate the look with colorful designs and
dots around the eyebrows.

Significance

In southern India, girls choose to wear a bindi, while in other parts of India it is the previlege of the married woman. A red dot on the forehead is an auspicious sign of marriage and guarantees the social status and holiness of the institution of marriage. The Indian bride steps over the dawn of her husband’s home, adorn in glittering apparels and ornaments, dazzling the red bindi on her forehead that is believed to usher in prosperity, and grants her a place as the guardian of the family’s welfare and progeny.

Traditionally, the area between the eyebrows (where the bindi is placed) is said to be the sixth chakra, ajna, the seat of “concealed wisdom”. The bindi is said to retain energy and strengthen concentration. The India Indian bridal Bindis also represents the third eye.The Nasadiya Sukta of the Rig Veda, the earliest known Sanskrit text, mentions the word Bindu.
