• Expanded Metal is made from sheets of solid metals that all are slit and stretched with each stroke of the upper die, forming a raised diamond pattern.
• This pattern is called regular or standard. This pattern varies by the gauge and type of material and the size of the diamond. The sheets can also be flattened by rollers for an optional style by passing them through a cold, roll reducing mill.
• Expanded metal also can be manufactured in heavy gauges for applications such as walkways, ramps, and catwalks of all types. Frequently, the heavier gratings and catwalks are used in industrial plants for flooring and stain treads.
• Due to the flexibility in materials and the sizes that it can be manufactured, expanded metal has a large application in filtration purposes. Thicker sizes with apertures above ½” also have certain general purpose applications like partitioning and covering for security.

The first number is the nominal diamond dimension Short Way of Design (SWD). The second number used in conjunction with the first number May specify the gauge of metal, weight per hundred square foot, or may have some other significance. Therefore, the word "GAUGE" Should Never Be Added to the Style Designation. Grating products are designated by weight per square foot of the finished product.

Expanded Metal Style Designation :

• Percent Open Area - The amount of open area to determine the amount of light or air passage.
• SWD - The distance from a point on a bond to a corresponding point on the following bond measured across the Short Way of Design. This distance is also sometimes referred as "pitch SWD".
• LWD - The distance from a point on a bond to a corresponding point on the following bond measured across the Long Way of Design. This distance is also sometimes referred as "pitch LWD".

• LWO - Long Way of Opening, the distance measured from the inside of the bond across to the inside of the bond LWD.
