Definition : This method measures the force perpendicular to the plane of the paper required to tear multiple plies

through a specified distance after the tear has been started using an Elmendorf-type tearing tester. The measured results can be used to calculate the approximate tearing resistance of a single sheet.

More than one sheet of the sample material are torn together through a fixed distance by means of the pendulum

of an Elmendorf-type tearing tester. The work done in tearing is measured by the loss in potential energy of the

pendulum. The average force exerted when a certain number of plies are torn together (work done divided by the total distance torn).

Standardization : TAPPI T-414 , APPITA P-400 , SCAN P-11 , ASTM D 689 , D 751 , D 1424 , IS 1060 , IS 1991.

Device Description : Easy to operate and has high accuracy level ± 1% of readout value and reliability with adjustable base leveling screws. Incision knife of hardened and ground spring steel . precision clamps with controlled jaws made of SS. Extra light low friction pointer with friction lining of textile materials. The complete pendulum is interchangeable . the scale is calibrated in mN/gmForce.

Test Description : the operator places the samples and an initial cut is made in set of four test pieces which are then torn through a given distance .the work done in tearing the test pieces is measured as the loss in potential energy of a pendulum .
