its main use is to carry difficult materials at slow speed. Early  elevators used a flat chain with small, steel buckets attached every few inches.

they operate at high speeds which throw the materials out of the buckets into the discharge throats by centrifugal force. The buckets are loaded on either the up or down leg side of the boot sections, and the buckets frequently dig through the material during loading.
