structured and random packings serve the basic purpose of providing intimate vapor-liquid contact for mass transfer operations. But for effective and efficient performance of packings, some more accessories or internals are required for (i) packings to rest on a support (support grids) , (ii) initiating even distribution of liquid feed over packed bed (liquid distributors), (iii) intermediate liquid distribution to prevent channeling over certain height of packed bed (liquid redistributors), (iv) collecting liquid at intermediate sections to feed it to liquid distributor (liquid collectors), (v) preventing expansion or sweeping away of packed bed due to pressure fluctuations or high flow (bed limiters), (vi) efficient feeding arrangement for both liquid and vapour and (vii) prevent any liquid mist to enter the condenser (mist eliminators).
