Dimethylformamide, also known as DMF is an organic compound whose molecular formula is (CH3)2NC(O)H. It is an odorless and colorless liquid. It is miscible not only with water but almost all the liquid organic compounds. As the name suggest it is derived from 2 compounds namely methyl and formamide – amid of formic acid. It is an aprotic solvent. It has high boiling point. It is prepared by combining two chemicals - methyl formate and dimethylamine.
