Cucumis sativus is a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family Cucurbitaceae, also known as cucumber. The cucumber is originally from India but is now grown on most continents. Cucumbers are alkaline, no starchy vegetables. Cucumber is low calorie vegetable indeed has more nutrients to offer than just water and electrolytes. Cucumbers are considered cooling, diuretic and laxative. This vegetable is very soft and cool.

Benefits and uses:

Cucumbers are a rich source of triterpene phytonutrients called cucurbitacins and also lignans, and flavonoids, which provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer benefits. Cucurbitacins A, B, C, D and E are all contained in fresh cucumber.

The flavonoid antioxidants, including quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, and kaempferol, which provide specific antioxidant benefits, including increased scavenging of free radicals and increased overall antioxidant capacity.

Cucumbers are 95% water, keeping the body hydrated while helping the body eliminates toxins. Cucumbers have most of the vitamins the body needs in a single day. The silicon and sulfur in cucumbers help to stimulate hair growth.

Cucumbers are known to contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol. These three lignans have a strong connection with reduced risk of several cancer types, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and prostate cancer.
