Metallurgical coal also known as coking coal is used to produce coke due to its caking ability, that is the primary source of carbon in steel making. Metallurgical Coke, a pure form of carbon is used in basic oxygen furnaces.
Bituminous coal is used as a classifier for the its metallurgical grade. It is harder and blacker, contains more carbon, less ash and moisture than lower grade coal.
