Coco Fiber, more commonly referred to as Coir, is a natural fibrous material found between the internal shell and outer coat of a coconut.  As environmental and economic concerns have grown, so has the use of Coco Fiber. White fiber comes from young coconuts and is mostly used to make ropes and fishing nets since the younger fiber is more resistant to salt water. The brown fiber comes from mature coconuts that have a layer of lignin deposited in the cellulose walls of the fiber during its maturation, which darkens its appearance and makes the fiber resistant to rotting. 

Extracting the Fiber :

• Coir Fiber has been an important source of revenue particularly for India and Sri Lanka which currently produce 90% of the world supply and well over 250,000 tons. With the demand for coco fiber rapidly escalating, newer technology is being researched to process its extraction.  
• Mature coconut trees produce 50-100 coconut fruit per year and they are harvested by collecting once fallen, workers climbing up the trees to remove and even trained monkeys to gather them.
• From there, depending on whether younger coconuts or mature coconuts go through a process of soaking in salt water and/or fresh water for literally 6-10 months before being ready to harvest the fibers. It is a long and tedious process, but in India alone it provides work for over 500,000 people.
