characteristics
in comparison with quebracho and mimosa, it will be seen that chestnut has a much lower ph, and this natural acidity imparts to chestnut its characteristics of giving a high tannin fixation and firmness to leather tanned with it, lower water soluble and a higher resistance to water penetration.
Differing from the catechol tannins, chestnut is very stable to the effects of light, as it does not appreciably oxidize in air, and for this reason in addition to the acidic properties already mentioned, is a suitable constituent of heavy leather tanning blends.
Usage:-
chesnut extract is mainly used in mixture with quebracho and mimosa tannins for the manufacture of sole, saddler and equipment leathers.
Tanning of sole leather
