Caustic Soda is used for pH and alkalinity control of water base muds. It is effective in neutralizing acid gases when they enter a mud downhole.
Addition of Caustic Soda range from 0.1 ppb for low pH, low solids muds to as much as 3.0 ppb for Addition of Caustic Soda range from 0.1 ppb for low pH, low solids muds to as much as 3.0 ppb for high pH muds. NaOH is used in lime muds to control soluble calcium ion through pH control.
