RHA can be used as a soil ameliorant to improve soil quality. It can increase the pH of acidic soils, which can increase nutrient availability and affect hydro-physical properties. RHA is also porous, which helps distribute water in the soil and reduces water acidity. RHA can also be used as a substitute for inorganic fertilizers, or in combination with them, or as a carrier for biofertilizers.

RHA is a good insulator and can be used to prevent steel from cooling too quickly during high melting point casting, which can produce higher quality steel.
