Carbon steel bars are available in round, square, flat, and hexagon bars in the hot rolled or cold drawn condition.  While hot rolled and cold drawn bars have the same general shape, they are very different in their dimensional characteristics.

Hot Roll Bars – Produced on rolling mills that leave surface imperfections that include scale, seams, flat spots, ridges, etc.

Cold Drawn Bars – Hot rolled bars that have had secondary processes applied to improve the surface finish and to size the bar more precisely. 

Carbon steel bar is defined as such, when no minimum chemical content is specified for aluminum, chromium, cobalt, columbium, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, or zirconium, or any other element added to obtain a desired alloying effect. 

High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel bars consist of a group of steels with chemical compositions developed to maximize strength, ductility, weldability, and corrosion resistance.  HSLA steels are produced with an emphasis on these properties rather than chemical composition limits.  For this reason they are not considered alloy steels.

Hot Rolled Steel bar is widely used for all general fabrication and repairs in industrial maintenance, agricultural implements, transportation equipment, etc. HR A1011 Steel Flat is stripped from coil and A36 / A572 / A529  is rolled as bars.

Steel bar is typically produced in three main shapes:

• Flat
• Round
• Square/Hex

Material may also be available in odd shapes, half oval, half rounds, etc

Each of these hot rolled steel bar shapes are typically used in industrial maintenance, agricultural implements, transportation equipment, ornamental work, etc.

Cold Drawn Bar is made from SBQ (special bar quality) HR bar.  It is drawn through a die reducing the cross-sectional area of the bar, and giving it a smooth ‘drawn’ finish.  Depending on the shape of the die, the finished product can have a round, hexagonal, square, or flat cross section.  Cold drawn bars have greater size accuracy, straightness, and increased tensile and yield strength, as well as improved machinability. A-36 steel bar is one of the most widely used carbon steel bars for construction and manufacturing. A36 bar is a hot rolled steel bar that is weldable, formable, and machinable.

Intermediate tensile strength carbon steel for use in riveted, bolted, or welded construction of bridges and buildings, manufactured parts and equipment.
