Contact SupplierWHAT DOES C-TPAT CERTIFICATION MEAN? What does C-TPAT certification mean? The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) is a voluntary United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program which is also supported by the Department of Homeland Security. The initiative intends to seek voluntary cooperative relationships between CBP and organizations such as importers, carriers, and brokers who agree to ensure the integrity of their security practices. These organizations also must communicate their security guidelines to trading and supply chain partners.
Why is C-TPAT Important?
When any goods are imported, the CBP assigns an unknown risk value to each shipment such as supplier, country of origin, developed intelligence, type of product, etc. When a C-TPAT certified company imports any goods, the CBP deducts some points from the risk value. Due to this the imported goods are placed in a preferred category. Even if the shipment is needed to be inspected the process is much faster.
This results in reducing the custom fees, inspection fees, cargo fees, faster time to market, and has an immediate effect on the company's bottom line.
The program was launched in November 2001 with seven initial participants, which were all large U.S. companies. The goal of C-TPAT is to protect supply chains, identify any potential security gaps, and implement specific measures to strengthen border security and keep the United States safe. The program is based on the premise that Customs and Border Protection can better protect the public with the cooperation of importers, carriers, and brokers who manage their supply chain.
Companies who achieve C-TPAT certification must have a documented process for determining and minimizing risks throughout their international supply chain. Entrance into this program allows companies to be considered a low risk, resulting in expedited processing of their cargo, including fewer Customs examinations. If you want to participate in C-TPAT, you will have to complete an online electronic application which includes corporate information, a supply chain security profile, and acknowledgment of an agreement to participate voluntarily.
Your organization will also have to conduct a comprehensive self-assessment of your supply chain security procedures meeting the C-TPAT security criteria. PNG Worldwide LLC can help assist with details regarding this certification.
When an entity joins CTPAT, an agreement is made to work with CBP to protect the supply chain, identify security gaps, and implement specific security measures and best practices. Applicants must address a broad range of security topics and present security profiles that list action plans to align security throughout the supply chain. CTPAT members are considered to be of low risk, and are therefore less likely to be examined at a U.S. port of entry.
