Atazanavir is used in combination with other drugs, including ritonavir (Norvir), in adults and children at least 3 months of age and weighting at least 1 pound of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (10 kg). In a family of drugs called protease inhibitors, atazanavir is present. It functions by lowering the blood level of HIV. While HIV is not healed by atazanavir, it will decrease the risk of contracting acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and diseases associated with HIV, such as extreme infections or cancer. The risk of spreading the HIV virus to others will lessen with these drugs and practising healthy sex and making other lifestyle improvements.
