Technically used to describe types of pearls from the black-lip (pinctada margaritifera) oyster in western to central pacific ocean or from la paz pearl oyster (pinctada mazatlanica) or rainbow-lipped oyster (pteria sterna) in the eastern pacific between baja california and peru. These all produce anatural black pearl. More generally, the term black pearls can also refer to natural black freshwater pearls or pearls dyed black or any dark colored pearl. (many types of pearls called "black" are really a variety of dark colors).
