Bitumen Mastic

Bitumen mastic is mixture of hard grade bitumen, mineral fillers & fine aggregates. Bitumen mastic is a void less mass. The consistency of mastic is such that it flows like a highly viscose fluid at temperature a about 200 0 C but on cooling down it becomes hard. It is impermeable, durable and highly resistant to deformation.

Bitumen mastic is a homogeneous mortar and has the ability to self heal cracks and avoid bleeding. It absorbs shocks and vibrations.

Bitumen mastic is use for industrial buildings, warehouses, grain storage structures, surfacing of bridge decks, road foot paths, LPG Bottling plants and as damp-proofing material for underground tanks, basements etc.

It is also used as a base coat/underlay to receive floor coverings such as linoleum, flexible PVC Sheets, rubber, acid proof tiles, as a covering of floors for electroplating shops, processing departments, chemicals, liquor, wash sections, gutter and in fertilizers, rayon, die stuff or water treatments plants and other chemical factories where continues or frequent contact with dilute effluents is expected.

The various ingredients depending upon the use of bitumen mastic are mixer and cooked in a mechanically agitated mixer called mastic cooker to get a homogeneous mass.

There are different types of bitumen mastic suitable for different purposes:

• Bitumen Mastic for flooring -IS : 1195-1978.
• Bitumen Mastic for Waterproofing of roofs IS: 3037-1965.
• Bitumen Mastic for Bridge decking and roads IS : 5317-1969.
• Bitumen Mastic for Tanking & damp-proofing – IS: 5871-1970.
• Bitumen Mastic anti-static & electrically conducing grade- IS: 8374-1977.
• Bitumen Mastic –acid resistance grade- IS: 9510-1980.
• Black pitch, mastic flooring (oil resistant)
• Bitumen Mastic for water proofing and protective coating for concrete slabs.
