A thin-film solar cell is a second-generation solar cell created by coating one or more thin layers, or thin films (TF), of photovoltaic material over a substrate such as glass, plastic, or metal. Thin-film solar cells, such as cadmium telluride (CdTe), copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS), and amorphous thin-film silicon, are commercially utilized in a variety of technologies. The layer thickness ranges from a few nanometers (nm) to tens of micrometres (m), making it significantly smaller than the traditional, first-generation crystalline silicon solar cell (c-Si), which utilizes wafers up to 200 m thick.
