Cotter pins contain a narrow U- shaped piece of metal with a flared and circular top. Once the cotter pin is placed into the hole, the two ends are bent into the different directions deforming the pins, so it cannot be easily removed from a hole.

It is easy to install and remove Cotter pins; it comes in different shapes and sizes, but the most common is the split pin variety.
