Silica (sio2) is an oxide of silicon and is present in almost all minerals. It is found in surface and well water. Silica is a problem for high pressure boilers as it exhibits enough volatility that high pressure boilers will have silica carry over to the vapour partition. When the steam pressure is reduced in turbines silica will precipitate on the blades as a glassy deposit which reduces efficiency.
