Anti-embolism stockings, also known as compression stockings or Thrombo–Embolus deterrent (TED) stockings, are used to reduce the risk of blood clots in your legs. They are often worn during or after surgery, or when you are less active than normal and at a higher risk of developing blood clots. 

Anti-embolism stockings work by applying graduated compression to your legs, which helps improve blood circulation and makes it less likely for a clot to form. You should wear them day and night until you are able to move normally again.

You might need to wear anti-embolism stockings if you:

•        Are having major surgery 

   

• Have reduced mobility due to surgery or illness 
• Are taking certain medications
• Have a medical history that indicates a need for them 
• Have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more 
• Are traveling for more than three hours in the four weeks before or after your hospital stay 
• Are over 60 
• Have a disorder that makes your blood more likely to clot 
• Smoke 
• Are pregnant
