Nitrite in aquaculture system is due to feed waste, faeces and plankton crash. The excess nitrogen will be converted in to ammonia (TAN, NH₃, and NH₄+), which is then converted to nitrite (NO₂), simultaneously into nitrate (NO₃) by denitrifying bacteria. But under low pH condition, the converted nitrite becomes toxic to the animal.
