• Liquid penetrant testing is one of the oldest and simplest NDT method
• Used to reveal surface discontinuities by bleedout of a coloured dye from the flaw
• Technique is based upon ability of a liquid to be drawn into a clean surface discontinuity by capillary action
• After a period (dwell time=min.10min) excess penetrant is removed and a developer is applied to draw penetrant which is trapped in flaws/cracks to the surface where it will be visible.

Advantages :

• Highly sensitive-even small discontinuities can be detected
• Metallic & Non metallic, Magnetic & Non magnetic, conductive & Non conductive materials can be inspected
• Rapid inspection of large areas and volumes
• Suitable for parts with complex shapes
• Indication are produced directly on the surface of the part can be observed visually(Naked eye)
