The process of removing divalent cat ions, usually calcium or magnesium, from water. When a sample of water contains more than 120 mg of these ions per liter, expressed in terms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), it is generally classified as a hard water. Hard waters are frequently unsuitable for many industrial and domestic purposes because of their soap-destroying power and tendency to form scale in equipment such as boilers, pipelines, and engine jackets. Therefore it is necessary to treat the water either to remove or to alter the constituents for it to be fit for the proposed use. Water described as "hard" is high in dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. Hard water is not a health risk, but a nuisance because of mineral buildup on fixtures and poor soap and/or detergent performance. Cartridge filtration units generally operate most effectively and economically on applications having contamination levels of less than 50 – 80 ppm. For heavier contamination applications, cartridges are normally used as final polishing filters. Demineralization is the process of removing mineral salts from water by using the ion exchange process. Demineralised water is water completely free (or almost) of dissolved minerals as a result of one of the following processes :     Distillation     Deionization     Membrane filtration (reverse osmosis or nanofiltration)     Electrodyalisis     Or other technologies. Demineralization ( DM ) Water Treatment Plants Demineralized water also known as Deionized water, water that has had its mineral ions removed. Mineral ions such as cations of sodium, calcium, iron, copper, etc and anions such as chloride, sulphate, nitrate, etc are common ions present in water. Deionization is a physical process which uses specially-manufactured ion exchange resins which provides ion exchange site for the replacement of the mineral salts in water with water forming H+ and OH- ions. Because the majority of water impurities are dissolved salts, deionization produces a high purity water that is generally similar to distilled water, and this process is quick and without scale buildup. De-mineralization technology is the proven process for treatment of water. A DM Water System produces mineral free water by operating on the principles of ion exchange, Degasification, and polishing. Demineralized Water System finds wide application in the field of steam, power, process, and cooling. The water free from any mineral is called De- Mineralised Water (D.M.Water). Naturally occurring water has various salts in dilute form which are called dissolved solids (TDS) . When the water having such mineral is required to be free from this, it is to be treated in Ion Exchange Resins column (H form) which adsorbs the positively charge ion.
