Refining of vegetable oils is required to remove free fatty acid, gums, waxes, odour and colouring pigment etc from Oil. Refining is carried out either by batch operation or as continuous operation. With certain oils even physical refining can be carried out instead of chemical.  1. Batch Chemical Refinery For batch refining the equipments required are Neutralizer, Bleacher, Deodorizer, and other accessories and is suitable for low production of refined Oil. 2. Continuous Chemical Refinery For higher capacities Continuous Refining Process is preferred over Batch Refining. Continuous Refining comprises of following section. Pre-treatment / Degumming Section Bleaching Section Neutralising Section Deodorization Section 3. Physical Refinery For some oils like palm oil can be refined using the process of physical refining. In this process, after pre-treatment of oil, the oil is deodorized and physically refined. The Free Fatty Acid (F.F.A.) present in the oil is distilled off at high temperature and high vacuum.

oil and water are pumped counter currently into the splitting tower under high pressure, where in splitting takes place. The crude fatty acid and sweet water are then flashed into respective flash tanks and taken to settling tank. this is a batch process which involves complete saponification of oil with caustic and then separation of glycerine. First the complete saponification of oils takes place, by addition of caustic lye, then the mass is left to settle in the pan. Two layers are thus formed. The upper layer of soap at about 60% tfm content and a lower layer of water containing glycerine and the water soluble impurities originally found in the oils. The glycerine water which has been separated from the soap is further washed diluting it again with water.

the dry mix process is recommended when a medium bulk density powder detergent is required. The basic process comprises of all the raw materials being added into a mixer as per the sequence of the formulation. The mixer used depends on the characteristics and moisture of the final product. The advantage of this process to produce detergent powder, compared to the more traditional spray drying process, is the almost total elimination of fuel cost for water evaporation.
