Poldi Hardness Tester

One of these is the Poldi-hammer shown in the figure given above. The hammer type portable impact hardness tester is useful for simple and quick determination of Brinell hardness of metals such as steel, Cast Iron, Brass, Aluminium, Copper etc. Due to easy handling and maneuverability, this tester is most suitable for testing heavy castings and other components, difficult to be carried to a table type hardness tester. For testing, load is applied on the work piece (specimen) and a standard test bar in linear direction through a special Brinell Ball of 10 mm diameter by a hammer blow as explained below. The tester is supplied with calibrated bars of different hardness. For hardness measurement, selection of a calibrated bar is done such that its hardness is approximately equal to hardness expected of the work piece. For a given hardness of calibration bar, at the ratio of the two diameters youve measured, a value of hardness is given, the hardness of the work piece.

Intermediate Gear

When there is only one gear on each shaft, as shown in above figure, the assembly is knownas simple gear train. The gears are represented by their pitch circles. When the distance between two shafts is small, gear 1 and gear 2 are made to mesh with each other to transmit motion from one shaft to the other, as shown at (a) in above figure.Since gear 1 drives gear 2, gear 1 is called the driver and gear 2 is called the driven or follower. It may be noted that the motion of the driven gear is opposite to the motion of driving gear. If,

Fabric Filter

In pneumatic conveying systems handling fine or dusty material, the method of filtration thathas become almost universally adopted is a bag type fabric filter. These filters are commonlycalled baghouses. Most baghouses use long, cylindrical bags (or tubes) made of woven orfelted fabric as a filter medium.During cleaning, dust that has accumulated on the bags is removed from the fabric surfaceand deposited in the hopper for subsequent disposal. Depending on the typeconstruction ofbaghouse, cleaning can be carried out while the baghouse is on-line (filtering) or is off-line(in isolation).Standard fabric filters can be used in pressure or vacuum service, but only within the range of about 640 millimeters of water column (25 inches of water column). Well-designed and operated baghouses have been shown to be capable of reducing overall particulate emissions to less than 0.05 gm3(0.020 grft3 ), and in a number of cases, to as low as 0.002 to 0.011 gm3 (0.001 to 0.005 grft3).

Allen Cap Screws

As compared to ordinary fasteners, less socket screws of the same size can achieve the same clamping force in a joint, As fewer screws are required for a given job, fewer holes are required to be drilled and tapped, There will be weight reduction on account of smaller size of the component parts since the cylindrical heads of socket screws need less space than hex heads and require no additional wrench space.

Structural Bolts

Structural Bolts are designed for the connection of structural members. These bolts are of high tensile strength and are used in conjunction with high strength nuts and hardened steel washers in structural steelwork. Sometimes they are abbreviated to HSFG (high strength friction grip) bolts when they are tightened to a specified minimum shank tension so that transverse loads are transferred across the joint by friction between the plates rather than by shear across the bolt shank. Information about structural bolts application, product and dimensions standards, tensioning methods for slip critical connections, joint preparation and precaution for slip critical connections is given in this article.

Socket Head Cap Screw

Socket head cap screws are used for applications with limited space. They have cylindrical head and internal wrenching features (mostly hexagon socket) that allow them to be used in locations where externally wrenched fasteners aren't desirable. They are used for critical vehicle applications, machine tools, tools and dies, earth moving and mining machinery, and a wide range of engineering applications. The most important reasons for the increasing use of socket head cap screws in industry are safety, reliability and economy. In this article information is given on 1936 and 1960-Series socket head cap screws, advantages of socket head cap screws, product and dimensions standards, advantages of Unbrako socket head cap screws, information on metric socket head cap screws made by Unbrako as per ANSI standard and countersunk head screws with hexagon socket.

Pump Ring

The weight of the piping connected to the inletsuction and outletdischarge flanges should be independently supported to avoid putting excessive weight on the pump, Gradual slope should be provided in the piping for the smooth flow by gravity of any liquidentering the piping. For this reason, suctioninlet side piping should slope down towards thepump and dischargeoutlet side piping should slope down towards away from the pump. When the liquid entering along with the incoming gases is more, separator with arrangement for removing the liquid from the system before it enters the pump should be provided.

Dry Electrostatic Precipitator

An ESP uses a high voltage electrostatic field to separate dust, fume or mist from a gasstream. The precipitator consists of vertical parallel plates (collecting plateselectrodes)forming gas passages 12 to 16 in. (30.5 to 40.6 cm) apart. Discharge electrodes areelectrically isolated from the plates and suspended in rows between the gas passages.Every particle either has or can be given a charge - positive or negative. A high voltage system provides power to the discharge electrode to generate an electrical field. Theparticulate, entrained in the gas, is charged while passing through the electrical field. Theparticulate is then attracted to the grounded collector plate, and forms a dust layer on theplate.

Carburizing Hardening Process

Numerous industrial applications require a hard wear-resistant surface called the case, and a relatively soft, tough core. This is achieved by case hardening. Information above various case hardening methods is given in this article. The first three methods change the chemical composition, carburizing by the addition of carbon, nitriding by the addition of nitrogen and cyanidingcarbonitriding by the addition of both carbon and nitrogen. The last two methods do not change the chemical composition of the steel and are essentially shallow-hardening methods. In flame and induction hardening the steel must be capable of being hardened and therefore, the carbon content must be about 0.30 percent or higher.
