PR-SERIES RADIOMETERS

The PR-Series radiometers are often used in non-weather forecasting applications. The photo above is on Baffin Island, Canada, where measurements are being made in the ice pack with a pair of PR-Series radiometers.

Among other things, customers use PR-Series radiometers, to remotely sense soil, sea, snow, ice and vegetation properties in frequency channels ranging from 1.4 to 89 GHz. Portable, modular, rugged PR-Series radiometers are ideal for accurate and reliable atmospheric and earth surface observations. They have been operated from aircraft, trailer, snowmobile and dogsled platforms. PR-Series radiometers of different bands can be used simultaneously to solve custom problems or collect research data.

Raymetrics Telescopes

Raymetrics offers a custom LIDAR design service for LIDARs which cannot be built from within our standard range of modular components. These can include entire LIDAR stations, Differential Absorption LIDARs (DIAL Systems) for ozone and potentially for other gases, and LIDAR components such as specialist telescopes.

Raymetrics telescopes are designed for LIDARs with a focal point inside the telescope (as opposed to out the back where an eye-piece would be for atronomical telescopes). This reduces size and weight and also reduces the size of the secondary mirror, resulting in reduced obscuration and up to 40% increased signal.

Mirror coatings are designed for wavelengths beyond the visible light range (for UV and IR wavelength). Optical quality glass is also used for telescope windows, thereby reducing chromatic aberration, which is extremely important for LIDARs. Glass is also not used to focus, which also results in chromatic aberration.

200, 300 or 400 mm telescopes are available as standard, with other custom sizes on request.

Lidar

The LR111-D300 model LIDAR is an active laser remote sensing instrument, designed to provide a wealth of information about the atmosphere, including unambiguous detection of volcanic ash. The system can also be upgraded to detect water vapour, allowing for remote humidity profiling. Raymetrics has been building Raman depolarization LIDARs since 2004. However the specifications of the LR111-D300 model LIDAR have been determined according to UK Met Office and EARLINET (European LIDAR Network) requirements.
A 300mm telescope and laser emitting 60mJ at 355nm make the LR111-D300 probably the most powerful eye-safe LIDAR available commercially.

COMPACT AUTOMATIC AEROSOL LIDAR

The CE376 is a compact, eyesafe backscatter LiDAR, featuring outstanding performances for the automated continuous monitoring of aerosols.
It operates in the visible (green) and/or in the near infrared (NIR) with options for depolarization channels for enhanced aerosol characterisation. The rugged, robust, fully integrated system operates without shutdown, without any human attendance, without maintenance, without need for authorization, without a special room, even in harsh environmental conditions It is particularly easy to install, outdoor or indoor, to transport and even to use onboard a vehicle or a plane.

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE

  • The laser emits a light pulse that is scattered by the particles present in the atmosphere
  • A tiny part of the pulse light is directed backward towards the instrument (backscatter)
  • The time of flight of the pulse between emission and reception indicates the distance of the scattering particles
  • The amount of backscattered light received at each distance depends on the quantity and type of the particles
  • The depolarization reception channel measures only the light that has been depolarized, indicating the presence of non spherical particles

WIND SHEAR DETECTION SYSTEMS

ShearScout is a low level wind shear alert system designed to enhance the safety, regularity and efficiency of aviation in changing wind conditions. Wind shear encounters below an altitude of 1, 000ft pose a serious threat to aircraft and may cause dangerous deviations from the intended flight path. The pilot has very little time or altitude to take evasive action. To reduce this threat, ShearScout combines the latest UCAR Phase-3 LLWAS technology and Selex ES system know-how to detect low level wind shear along the runway corridor and issue timely warnings to ATC staff.

The NBC5056 Weather Station is designed for military applications requiring Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) contamination and decontamination survivability. The NBC5056 is a compact, self-contained, automatic station with no moving parts. The weather sensors and data acquisition computer are all contained in a single unit that is easy to install. The NBC5056 reports wind speed and direction, temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity. Additional external sensors can be added through an expansion input. Unique to the NBC5056 is its patented Thermal Field Variation technique for measuring wind speed and direction. The station detects thermal field changes caused by wind passing by a heated cylinder. ENTLN: UNIQUE LIGHTNING DETECTION CHARACTERISTICS

Detection of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning is critical in protecting people and property. However, CG lightning actually accounts for only a small percentage of the total lightning discharges that occur in the atmosphere. In-cloud (IC) lightning flashes, on the other hand, account for the vast majority of lightning activity. High detection efficiency of IC for discharges, combined with advanced analytics and display capabilities, enable improved lead times for identification of storm cell growth and development to improve early storm warning capability.

TOTAL LIGHTNING DETECTION AND SEVERE WEATHER ALERTING
