Cutting Oil

In metal cutting operation ninety-seven percent of the energy consumed is converted into heat. If the right kind of cooling doesn’t take place at the cutting edge, the heat can damage both the cutting tool and the work piece as an overheated tool loses its hardness, which shortens the tool life, and an overheated work piece can lose its dimensional integrity. To cool the cutting tool and work piece at the cutting zone continuously; metal working lubricants, coolants and fluids are used. These fluids improve the tool life by reducing wear, increase lubrication, reduce work piece thermal deformation, provide excellent surface finish and flush away chips from the cutting zone.  These products are also used to prevent rust and corrosion. In order to realize the lubricating and cooling process water miscible and non water miscible metal working fluids have been formulated.

Water Soluble Cutting Oil

These cutting oils are more commonly referred to as soluble oils. This however, is a misnomer because they are not really soluble in water but form an emulsion when added to water. These emulsifiable oils are mineral oil based concentrates, which contain emulsifiers that allow them to mix with water and form a milky white emulsion. They also contain additives to improve their lubricating properties, rust and corrosion inhibitors and a biocide to help control foul smell.

Quenching Oil

The word quenching means:

  • Rapid cooling from a high temperature by immersion in a liquid bath of oil or water.       
  • About 85% of quenching fluids are mineral oil based as the quenching power of water falls rapidly with increase in temperature, whereas that of oil remains fairly constant up to the range 60°C to 80°C. The rise in temperature of oil produces drop in viscosity, a change which assists cooling and so offsets the reverse influence of rise in temperature itself, whereas water does not possess such compensating effect.
  • Quenching is the process by which the desired mechanical properties and hardness of a metal is achieved by controlled cooling from an elevated temperature using a quench fluid. Quenching is usually used with metals that are alloyed with small amounts of other metals. At high temperature the alloying metals are dissolved in the base metal. If the material is cooled slowly, the alloy elements have time to precipitate out separately. If the metal is quenched, the alloying metals are trapped within the crystal grains, making them harder.       
  • Optimal quench uniformity is essential if the potential for cracking, distortion, residual stress and spotty hardness is to be minimized. This means that heat transfer must be as uniform as possible throughout the quenching process. Further optimal uniformity of quenchant flow around all surfaces is necessary. One of the most important factors affecting quench uniformity is the design of the quench system. Agitation is one of the most critical areas of system design. Propeller agitation of the quench oil is necessary if uniform heat transfer throughout the quenching operation, producing less cracking and distortion has to be achieved.       
  • The performance of quenching oil can be characterized by its ability to extract heat from the part surface. Previously, aqueous quenching media were employed. The aqueous fluids provided extremely rapid cooling setting up excessive amounts of internal stress in the object. Mineral oil based fluids avoided this difficulty. Further, they possess sufficient durability, cleanliness and consistency. Durability refers to additive lifetime after being exposed to thermal stressing while consistency relates to constant additive performance over time and cleanliness relates to amounts of deposits on the work piece and/or staining thereof.

Rubber Processing Oil

Rubber processing oils  are used in the manufacture of virtually all rubber products such as tyres , tubes, battery cases, footwear, mats, hoses etc. They are the keystones from the raw material  stage to the finished products. Rubber oils are added to the polymer that may or may not have been oil extended. They  perform the following functions:

Rubber process oils can be broadly classified into three basic groups depending on  the physical arrangement of the carbon atoms namely , paraffinic , naphthenic and aromatic. All petroleum oils are mixtures of various hydrocarbon groups and their classification is arbitrary and is based on the predominance of a particular hydrocarbon group.

RPO 165This is a highly paraffinic medium viscosity type of oil specifically developed for use as plasticizer in the manufacture of epdm rubbers. The oil also possesses good resistance to evaporation loss.

RPO 245It is a light coloured paraffinic type of oil and has good colour stability. It also has high flash point and good high temperature properties, but it has low solvency. It finds greatest use in butyl and ethylene propylene rubber. It is recommended to use for the processing of light coloured rubber goods such as white walled tyres, shoe soles, toys, sporting goods, etc.

RPO 255This is a highly paraffinic type oil specially developed for compounding purpose of shoe sole application. The oil has moderate solvency power with low evaporation loss.

RPO 541This is a napthenic type of oil and has fairly good colour stability with adequate high temperature properties . Its solvency is better than RPO 245/255, and  is suitable as general purpose rubber oil formats , footwear , moulded and extruded goods.

RPO 590This is a napthenic type of oil , specifically developed  to meet the requirement of the major tyre manufacturer. The product is used to make the fabric-coating compound, used in coating nylon tyre cords of passenger vehicle tyres.

RPO 710 This is an aromatic type of oil and due to the presence of double bonds it is the least stable compared to RPO 245 and RPO 541. It is dark in colour and has good solvency making it compatible with most rubber polymers. It finds extensive use in the manufacture of automobile tyres, belting, battery case etc. where colour is not an important factor.

RPO 715 It is also an aromatic process oil with higher viscosity and is specifically developed for use as an extender oil in the manufacture of styrene butadiene rubber.

EDM Oil

Electric Discharge Machining Oil is a metal removal process involving the removal of material from the work piece by a series of controlled electric discharges or sparks. The tool and the work piece are insulated by a special dielectric fluid. These fluid are formulated with a highly refined, narrow cut paraffinic base stock with excellent oxidation stability which helps reduce the formation of oxidation products that will alter the dielectric strength of the fluid. The product is colourless and virtually odourless. The product exhibits a relatively high flash point that helps to reduce the possibility of fire. The low viscosity of the fluid provides good circulation through the spark gap and more rapid removal and settling of metal fines.

Gear Oil

Gear oil is made specifically for lubrication of transmission components.High viscosity of gear oil ensures transfer of lubricant throughout the gear train. This is necessary since the devices needing this heavy oil do not have pumps for transferring the oil with only a portion of the lowermost gears bathed in an oil sump. Base Oil

Base Oil is the name given to lubrication grade oils initially produced from refining crude oil (mineral base oil) or through chemical synthesis (synthetic base oil). Base oil is typically defined as oil with a boiling point range between 550 and 1050 deg F, consisting of hydrocarbons with 18 to 40 carbon atoms. This oil can be either paraffinic or napthenic in nature depending on the chemical structure of the molecules.
