8-Hydroxyquinoline benzoates were developed as a new set of 8-HQ derivatives for highly sensitive fluorescent chemosensors for transition metal ions. A prominent fluorescence enhancement was found in the presence of transition metal ions such as Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺, and this was suggested to result from the suppression of radiationless transitions from the nπ* state in the chemosensors.

Applications : Distinct color change was found for azo 8-hydroxyquinoline benzoate upon addition of Hg²⁺ or Cu²⁺ in CH₃CN, which allows for detection of Hg²⁺ or Cu²⁺ from other metal ions by the ‘naked eye’.

Glycine is a colorless, sweet-tasting crystalline solid. It is unique among the proteinogenic amino acids in that it is achiral. It can fit into hydrophilic or hydrophobic environments since it exists as zwitterion at natural pH, due to its minimal side chain of only one hydrogen atom. Glycine serves as a buffering agent in antacids,  analgesics,  antiperspirants, cosmetics, and toiletries.

Applications : The principal function of glycine is as a precursor to proteins, such as its periodically repeated role in the formation of the collagen helix in conjunction with hydroxyproline. It is also a building block for numerous natural products.

Hydroxyquinoline sulfate is an antiseptic with mild fungistatic, bacteriostatic, anthelmintic, and amebicidal action. Xanthinol Nicotinate is a form of Niacin that passes easily through cell membranes; Xanthinol Nicotinate is the most potent form of Niacin available. Xanthinol Nicotinate has been shown to increase brain glucose metabolism, improve brain ATP levels and improve brain blood flow (it acts as a vasodilator). As such, Xanthinol Nicotinate has been used to treat short-term memory disorders, mental flagging (i.e. lack of brain energy that compromises vigilance, concentration and attention) and insufficient blood flow to the arteries and the extremities. Furthermore Xanthinol Nicotinate has been clinically shown to improve the reaction speed of the elderly.

The biological property of copper compounds takes important role in as fungicides in agriculture and biocides in antifouling paints for ships and wood preservations. Very low level of copper is toxic to fungi and algae but the levels for mammal is much higher. The copper ions inhibit the metabolism of the fungus when they react with sulfur containing enzymes in the plant. Copper compounds form a protective barrier on the plant surface and thereby prevent fungi from entering the plant host. The fungicidal effect of copper compounds as non-systemic fungicides are such as bordeaux mixture, cupric hydroxide, copper arsenate, copper carbonate, cuprous oxide, copper-8-quinolinolate, copper oleate, copper sulfate, or copper oxychloride. Another important biocide application of copper compounds, such as copper sulfide is as an antifouling agent in paints.
