Nitrous Oxide Gas Plant

DESCRIPTION OF PROCESS


Nitrous Oxide ( N2O ) is manufactured by thermal decomposition of Ammonium Nitrate.

( Nitrous Oxide ) ( Water )
Ammonium Nitrate is melted and decomposed by reaching to a temperature of approximate 2500C to 2600C to give a mixture of Nitrous Oxide and super heated steam as per above reaction. At the same time impurities are produced including Ammonium Nitrate fumes, Nitrogen and Oxide of Nitrogen. The Steam and impurities are removed by scrubbing in turn with water, caustic soda and finally acid scrubber.

From the decomposition pot the hot gas including impurities enters the primary scrubber. The scrubber is fitted with a small condensing coil mounted at its top to condense water from part to the effluent gas stream and this water provides a counter-current flow for recovery of ammonium nitrate fumes from the gas. N2O gas leaving the primary scrubber passes to a stain steel water scrubber for the removal of ammonium nitrate fumes.

Finally, the gas passes through a mild steel caustic soda scrubber followed by a fiber glass / stain steel acid scrubber. The circulation of caustic and water to the respective scrubber is maintained by me of pumps. The scrubber gas is then allowed to collect in a rubber gasholder ( balloon ). The gas from the gasholder is sucked by a multi stage water lubricated compressor, which compresses the gas to approx. pressure of 65 kgs/cm2depending on ambient temperature.

The compressed gas passes through a gravity type water separator before being dried in Alumina Drier Battery. Finally Nitrous Oxide in liquid form is collected in a bank of three storage vessels. The storage vessels are kept cool by spraying chilled water on them.

During storage the impure nitrogen gas is being removed by venting out the gas after cooling down the storage vessels. The pure liquid nitrous oxide is then filled into cinders by weight. For this, the cinders are to be filled by keeping them on a weighing scale. Nitrous Oxide is liquefiable gas and is stored in cinders in liquid form only.

FUNCTION

To fractionally distil multi-component mixtures under atmospheric pressure as well as under reduced pressures with high efficiency.

50 Ltrs. To 5000 Ltrs. Reboiler with 5 to 30 theoretical stages.

SALIENT FEATURES

The reboiler is provided with a mechanical agitator to accomplish uniform boil up of the mixture without localized heating and hence avoiding thermal shocks. Controlled heating facility ensures fairly uniform boil-up rates and avoids over heating. Highly efficient structured packing provides a low HETP and low-pressure drop across the column. The unique reflux distribution system with control panel and adjustable program ensures high efficiency of separation. The design of condenser ensures low- pressure drop across it. The appropriate design of the subcooler ensures the entire material to be subcooled to the desired temperature before it is withdrawn. The vacating facility provided ensures easy removal of the distillate without disturbing the vacuum of the system . The vacuum manifold provides a unique feature where the column can be switched over to any vacuum pump at any time. Adequate vapour traps provided to ensure complete trapping of the uncondensed vapours thereby preventing the vapurs from entering the vacuum pumps. The entire column and assembly is provided with specially machined flanges, appropriates gaskets and leak proof accessories to ensure almost zero leaks.

Distillation Column

Batch Columns

In batch operation, the feed to the column is introduced batch wise. That is the column is charged with a batch and then the distillation process is carried out. When the desired task is achieved, a next batch of feed is introduced.

Continuous Columns

In Contrast, continuous columns process a continuous feed stream. No interruptions occur un there is a problem with the column or surrounding process units. They are capable of handling high throughputs and are the most common of the two types. We shall concentrate only on this class of columns. The vertical shell houses the column internals and together with the condense & reboiler constitute a distillation column. Separation of components from a liquid mixture via distillation depends on the differences in boiling points of the individual components. Also, depending on the concentrations of the components present, the liquid mixture will have different boiling point characteristics depends on the vapour pressure characteristics of liquid mixtures.

Reboiler Heat Exchanger

Shell and tube heat exchanger

Shell and tube heat exchangers consist of a series of tubes. One set of these tubes contains the fluid that must be either heated or cooled. The second fluid runs over the tubes that are being heated or cooled so that it can either provide the heat or absorb the heat required. A set of tubes is called the tube bundle and can be made up of several types of tubes: plain, longitudinally finned, etc. Shell and Tube heat exchangers are typically used for high pressure applications (with pressures greater than 30 bar and temperatures greater than 260C).

This is because the shell and tube heat exchangers are robust due to their shape.
There are several thermal design features that are to be taken into account when designing the tubes in the shell and tube heat exchangers.

SALIENT FEATURES

Falling film type of heat exchanger provided at the reboiler with a totally leak proof pump with mechanical seal ensures high heat trfer coefficient and facilitates vaporization of the liquid maintaining minimum temperature different between the source heat and the boiling point of the liquid at the operating pressure . This minimizes thermal impact to the liquid and also prevents localized heating. Thus heat sensitive materials can be handled very safely in this column. All the joints are carefully machined. PTFE gaskets provided between all flanged joints ensure leak proof system. This facilitates fractionation at high vacuum. A highly efficient structured packing with distributors ensures low HETP and low pressure drop.

The automatic / pneumatic reflux distribution system provided with control panel allows for programmed reflux distribution. This facilitates better control on the entire system and the quality of the performance of the column. The entire system is provided with flameproof fixtures. The energy meter provided at the panel gives the total energy consumption after a batch is worked out. Only one operator can operate the column efficiently. Vacuum / vapour traps and manifold system facilitates operating the column at selective vacuum at different lines without disturbing the column equilibrium. View glasses provided at various locations to have visual control on the system. The entire system is placed on a bolted steel frame, which can be assembled and dismantled quickly.
