Stainless Steel Alloys

The Stainless Steel FamilyA short description of the various grades of stainless steel and how they fit intodistinct metallurgical families. It has been written primarily from a Europeanperspective and may not fully reflect the practice in other regions.Stainless steel is the term used to describe an extremely versatile family ofengineering materials, which are selected primarily for their corrosion and heatresistant properties. All stainless steels contain principally iron and a minimum of 10.5% chromium. At thislevel, chromium reacts with oxygen and moisture in the environment to form aprotective, adherent and coherent, oxide film that envelops the entire surface of thematerial. This oxide film (known as the passive or boundary layer) is very thin (2-3namometres). [1nanometre = 10-9 m].The passive layer on stainless steels exhibits a truly remarkable property: whendamaged (e.g. abraded), it self-repairs as chromium in the steel reacts rapidly withoxygen and moisture in the environment to reform the oxide layer.Increasing the chromium content beyond the minimum of 10.5% confers still greatercorrosion resistance. Corrosion resistance may be further improved, and a widerange of properties provided, by the addition of 8% or more nickel. The addition ofmolybdenum further increases corrosion resistance (in particular, resistance to pittingcorrosion), while nitrogen increases mechanical strength and enhances resistance topitting.Categories of Stainless SteelsThe stainless steel family tree has several branches, which may be differentiated in avariety of ways e.g. in terms of their areas of application, by the alloying elementsused in their production, or, perhaps the most accurate way, by the metallurgicalphases present in their microscopic structures:FerriticMartensitic (including precipitation hardening steels)AusteniticDuplex steels, consisting of mixture of ferrite and austenite

NICKEL-BASE ALLOYS have a number ofunique properties, or combinations of properties, that allow them to be used in a variety ofspecialized applications. For example, the highresistivity (resistance to flow of electricity) andheat resistance of nickel-chromium alloys leadto their use as electric resistance heating elements. The soft magnetic properties ofnickel-iron alloys are employed in electronicdevices and for electromagnetic shielding ofcomputers and communication equipment. Ironnickelalloys have low expansion characteristicsas a result of a balance between thermal expansionand magnetostrictive changes withtemperature. Originally used as clock pendulums, these alloys are now widely employed aslead frames in packaging electronic chips andas the shadow-masks in color television tubes. On a larger scale, they provide one solution tocoping with the thermal expansion requirementsof storage and transportation tanks forthe growing liquid natural gas industry.Other properties of interest that expand themarkets and applications of nickel and nickelalloys include those to follow:Shape memory characteristics of equiatomicnickel-titanium alloys that allow them to beused as actuators, hydraulic connectors, andeyeglass framesThe high strength at elevated temperatureand resistance to stress relaxation that allowwrought nickel-beryllium-titanium to beused for demanding electrical/electronic applications, for example, springs subjected toelevated temperatures (up to 370 C, or 700F) for short timesThe combination of heat removal (high thermalconductivity) and wear resistance thatallows cast nickel-beryllium-carbon alloysto be used for tooling for glass forming operations.Resistance heating alloys are used in manyvaried applicationsfrom small household appliancesto large industrial process heating systemsand furnaces.

In appliances or industrialprocess heating, the heating elements are usua
