Ellagic acid is a cream coloured natural polyphenol present in free form and as ellagitanninsin fruits of Terminalia chebula Retz., bark of Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) Wight. & Arn (Fam.Combretaceae), fruit-rind of Punica granatum Linn. (Fam. Lythraceae), Juglans regia Linn. (Fam.Juglandaceae), Vitis vinifera Linn. (Fam. Vitaceae)Terminalia chebula is a deciduous forest tree found in North India, sub-Himalayan tracks fromthe Ravi eastwards to West Bengal and Assam, Himalayas and in Maharashtra (India). Fruitsare greenish yellow in colour hard, stony, drupe, ovate, longitudinally wrinkled having 5-6 ridges(longitudinal ribs). Fruit contains ellagitannins, ellagic acid (2-6%), gallic acid, chebulagic acid, chebulinic acid, terchebulin, terchebin, etc. Fruits are traditionally used as purgative, astringent, anti-ulcer drug and it is an important constituent of ayurvedic preparation Triphala churna.
