Calcium Propionate

Calcium propanoate or calcium propionate Ca(C2H5COO)2 is the calcium salt of propanoic acid. Calcium Propionate, (CH3CH2COO)2Ca, is an effective inhibitor of the growth of certain moulds and some bacteria and it is applied as a preservative in dairy products. It is listed as a food additive with E number 282. Calcium propanoate is used as a preservative in a wide variety of products, including bread, other baked goods, processed meat, whey, and other dairy products. In agriculture, it is used, amongst other things, to prevent milk fever in cows and as a feed supplement. Calcium propanoate is used in bakery products as a mold inhibitor, typically at 0.1-0.4% (though animal feed may contain up to 1%). It also becomes a source of Calcium in such food products. It is also used as a fungicide on fruit.

Sodium Formaldehyde Bisulfite

  • Molecular Weight 134.1
Sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate, also known as Sodium formaldehyde bisulfite (bisulphite), used as a preservative in cosmetic compositions. The sodium hydroxymethane sulfonate is used to improve the color stability of rosin resins and it has properties of both formaldehyde and sodium bisulfite. It is typically present in an amount of from 0.05% to 5.0%, preferably about 0.25%, based on the weight of the rosin resin. Sodium hydroxymethane sulfonate, also known chemically as sodium formaldehyde bisulfite, NaCH3 OSO3, is a white, water-soluble rather inexpensive powder which forms colorless and odorless solutions. Under alkaline conditions this compound is believed to slowly hydrolyze into formaldehyde and sodium bisulfite which by their presence render the desired antibacterial and antioxidant preservative properties, respectively.

Amyl Phenyl Acetate

Isoamyl Phenylacetate is a colorless, transparent liquid having a characteristic odor. To 2 ml of Isoamyl Phenylacetate, add 10 ml of ethanolic 10% potassium hydroxide TS, and boil gently with a reflux condenser in a water bath for 1 hour. The characteristic odor disappears, and an odor of isoamyl alcohol is evolved. To the solution of (1) above, add 10 ml of water, distill, discard 15 ml of the initial distillate, and acidify the remaining distillate with diluted hydrochloric acid. Crystals are deposited. Collect the crystals by filtration, wash with water, and recrystallize from boiling water. The melting point is 76 to 78.

Benzyl Acetate

Benzyl acetate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C9H10O2. It is the ester formed by condensation of benzyl alcohol and acetic acid. Benzyl Acetate is also known as Acetic Acid, Benzyl Ester, Acetic Acid Phenylmethyl Ester, Phenylmethyl Ethanoate etc. Benzyl acetate is found naturally in many flowers. It is the primary constituent of the essential oils from the flowers jasmine, ylang-ylang and tobira. It has pleasant sweet aroma reminiscent of jasmine. Consequently, it is used widely in perfumery and cosmetics for its aroma and in flavorings to impart apple and pear flavors. It is one of many compounds that is attractive to males of various species of orchid bees, who apparently gather the chemical to synthesize pheromones; it is commonly used as bait to attract and collect these bees for study.
