Molybdenum is a potent hardening agent and is a constituent of many heat treatable Alloy Steels. In Iron, it is effective in strengthening and hardening, causing austenite to transform to fine pearlite or bainite.

Titanium is used in gray iron. A small percentage promotes Graphitization. It is highly reactive in steel making and combines readily, and forms stable compounds with carbon, oxygen, nitrogen & sulphur. Because of its reactivity, it may be used to fix these elements, reducing eliminating their sometimes harmful effects.

Vanadium steels are used for general engineering purposes. Vanadium imparts hardness, tensile strength & machining qualities. Small quantity of vanadium added imparts excellent welding characteristics. When a large amount is added with chromium and tungsten in steel, to make high speed tools noted for hardness retention over a moderate temperature range.
