Cyclonic Spray Chamber Scrubber

Spray scrubbers consist of empty cylindrical or rectangular chambers in which the gas stream is contacted with liquid droplets generated by spray nozzles. A common form is a spray tower, in which the gas flows upward through a bank or successive banks of spray nozzles. Similar arrangements are sometimes used in spray chambers with horizontal gas flow. Such devices have very low gas pressure drops, and all but a small part of the contacting power is derived from the liquid stream. The required contacting power is obtained from an appropriate combination of liquid pressure and flow rate . Physical absorption depends on properties of the gas stream and liquid solvent, such as density and viscosity, as well as specific characteristics of the pollutant(s) in the gas and the liquid stream (e.g., diffusivity, equilibrium solubility). These properties are temperature dependent, and lower temperatures generally favor absorption of gases by the solvent. Absorption is also enhanced by greater contacting surface, higher liquid-gas ratios, and higher concentrations in the gas stream . Chemical absorption may be limited by the rate of reaction, although the rate-limiting step is typically the physical absorption rate, not the chemical reaction rate

Packed Bed Scrubber

In general the packed tower gas scrubber is designed to remove noxious gases and corrosive fumes from ventilation or process streams. Although able to handle small quantities of dust within the stream, the possibility of blockage is a disadvantage of this type of unit. Under these conditions the impingement plate scrubber is recommended. The facility for recovering valuable process chemicals is a particular attraction of the packed tower. In order to efficiently absorb contaminants such as HCL, SO2 and NH3, a large surface area of contact is required to achieve interaction between the liquid and gaseous phases. It is the nature of the contaminant, the concentration at the inlet and the desired efficiency which determine the type, size and quantity of packing. Operating Principles Contaminated air or gas enters the scrubber inlet where it is contacted with scrubbing liquor draining from the packed bed. The flow of gas then rises, counter-current to the flow of the scrubbing liquor, through the packed section where neutralization or removal of the contaminants takes place. The design of the packing promotes mass transfer with its multiple gas/liquid contact points, providing a large surface area, active surface renewal of the liquid phase and turbulent air flow characteristics. Before discharge to atmosphere the treated air passes through a droplet eliminator section at the top of the column. Careful attention is paid to the design of the liquor distribution system, choice of packing, gas velocities and liquor flow rates in order to achieve optimum performance.

Venturi Scrubber

Conventional in every respect, this venturi scrubber features a wet approach inlet which eliminates wet/dry zone build-up problems. This unit can be furnished with a fixed, butterfly or two door venturi throat section; smooth or flooded elbow and a conventional cyclonic mist separator. Larger separators may be furnished with radial inlet and mesh pad or chevron type demister section. Dust laden gases enter the unit vertically. Scrubbing liquid is introduced utilizing tangential pipes and a spray header, if required, over the venturi throat section to ensure complete coverage. The venturi throat is set to operate at a desired pressure drop for the highest collection efficiency. Scrubbed gases then make a 90 degree turn and enter a cyclonic separator where separation of the gases and free liquid droplets takes place. The slurry is discharged through the bottom and the dewatered, scrubbed gases are exhausted vertically via the top outlet.
