It is a standard General purpose VINYL ESTER resin based on epoxy back bone. It is a medium viscosity resin offering extremely good resistance combined with low shrinkage, high temperature properties, good adhesion to substrates and a high tensile elongation. It also combines the excellent mechanical and chemical properties of epoxy resins and the ease of processing of Polyester Resins. Vinyl ester resin is recommended for the manufacture of FRP by Hand lay up, Spray up, Filament winding, Centrifugal casting, Bag moulding and Pultrusion. FRP structures and equipments fabricated from Vinylester resin provide a number of advantages over those made with conventional materials of construction.

This pigmented layer then co-reacts with the moulding resin during the curing cycle to become an integral part of the moulded product. Gelcoat thus provides continuous coloured surfaces without any subsequent finishing operation. Since it reproduces the mould surface exactly, the gelcoating procedure eliminates the fibre pattern which is sometimes objectionable in reinforced polyester parts. The Gelcoat will produce a mirror image of the mould surface and it is possible to produce anything from a porcelain-like finish to a grained textured pattern. The resin vehicles for Gelcoat formulations can be varied over the broad range of properties possible with polyester systems, depending on the type of the service required of the finished moulding. Gelcoat finishes are currently being widely used on boats, bath tubs, automobile and truck parts, furniture, luggage, swimming pools, chemical storage tanks and a variety of similar items.
