Quenching Oil

  • Application Industrial

Quenching oil designed for rapid or controlled cooling of steels or metals as part of hardening, tempering or other heat-treatment process. Quenching oil serves two primary functions. It facilitates hardening of steels by controlling heat transfer during quenching and it enhances wetting of steel during quenching to minimize the formation of undesirable thermal and transformational gradients which may lead to increased distortion and cracking.

Quenching oils has a major advantage of a higher boiling range of 230C to 480C. This causes the slower corrective cooling stage to start sooner, enabling the release of transformation stresses which is the major problem with water cooling. Oil is, therefore, able to quench intricate shapes and high hardenability alloys successfully.

Also used to remove the heat produced by the oxidation of Napthalene in the production of phthalic anhydride used in plant for operating caustic solution to produce solid caustic soda.

STABILITY OF FRANK FHT 155:

FRANK FHT 155 is very stable at temperature up to 430C. Between 430C and 540C there is a tendency for FRANK FHT 155 to slowly decompose with the formation of Nitrate, alkali oxide and nitrogen. Also one of the ingredients will be slowly oxidized in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. The later can be avoided by excluding air by protecting the surface of the salt with inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon. There is also a tendency for the formation of a certain amount of Carbonate in the salt by absorption of carbon dioxide during prolonged use. Some carbonate may then be precipitated out of the salt. This is however of little consequence provided the system used is not easily blocked by the deposition of carbonate.

Nitriding Salts

  • Usage Industrial

FRANK ECONOMISER must not be used on baths. Salt bath nitriding/liquid nitriding advantages include active case hardening process ( Compound zone), additional lubricity, improved aesthetics. Dimensional stability or processed parts does not change and core properties are uncompromised.

Salt bath Nitriding/ Liquid Nitriding can be performed on through hardening steel. This yields the benefit of throughhardening in addition to a harder surface. This can be up to 75RC depending on the material.

Subjacent to the compound zone is another distinctive region the diffusion zone. This evolves from Progressive diffusion of the nitrogen, and consists of a solid solution of Nitrogen in the base material. The diffusion zone distributes another critical benefit of salt bath nitriding: Substantial enhancement of fatigue strength, typically between 20% to 100%.
