When entering escalators :

• Watch the direction of the moving step and step on and off with extra care
• Take care if you are wearing bifocals or similar eyewear
• Hold children firmly with one arm or hold child’s free hand
• Hold small packages firmly in one hand, but always leave one hand available to hold the handrail
• Grasp the handle as you step onto the moving step
• Do not step onto an escalator going in the opposite direction
• Do not take wheelchairs, electric scooters, strollers, hand carts, luggage carts or similar items on the escalator

When riding escalators :

• Keep loose clothing clear of steps and sides
• Wear closed-toed and hard-soled shoes, and avoid wearing footwear made of soft-resin or other rubbery materials
• Stand clear of the sides of the escalator
• Face forward and keep firm grip on the handrail
• Reposition your hand slowly if the handrail moves ahead or behind the steps
• Don’t climb onto or ride the handrail
• Do not let children sit on steps or stand too close to sides

When exiting escalators :

• Don’t hesitate and step off promptly
• Make sure to step over the comb fingers; don’t let your feet slide off the end of the escalator
• Immediately move clear of the escalator exit area; don’t stop to talk or look around since other passengers may be behind you

Special Sensors - Newer escalators have sensors which can monitor for unusual movement or operation of key components, automatically stopping the escalator if an abnormality is detected. These include :

• Handrail motion detector, which senses if the handrail movement is out of sync with the step movement
• Step integrity monitor, which detects broken, damaged or misaligned steps
• Missing step monitor, which senses if the escalator is operating with any steps missing
• Comb plate detectors, which are activated by unusual movement of the stationary plates at either end of the escalator
• Step level monitor, which checks to see that the steps are level as they enter the ends of the escalator.
• Skirt switches, designed to sense any entrapment between the step and skirt as the step approaches the comb plate area.

Other Features :

• Emergency stop buttons are provided at each end of the escalator for manual activation in an emergency situation.
• Controlled stop braking system helps assure that in the event of an emergency, the escalator stop is smooth and controlled.
• Under step lighting is mounted below the steps at either end of the escalator. By highlighting the separation between adjacent steps, under step lighting helps encourage passengers to get a good footing on the escalator step.
• Yellow comb fingers are found on most modern escalators. They help highlight the transition between the stationary comb plate and the moving steps.
• A handrail guard helps prevent fingers or objects from getting caught at the point where the escalator handrail enters the balustrade. On newer escalators, a special handrail guard switch detects such situations and initiates an automatic stop of the escalator.
